Dear People who hand out free newspapers at the Skytrain in the morning:

I totally understand that you have to make your money somehow, and that job must seem like a breeze. All you have to do is give people newspapers. Easy peasy! The thing is guys, at 7:30 in the morning, the last thing I want to see is two grown men make a bee line to hand me a newspaper that I a) don't want to read b) turn down EVERY MORNING when you attempt to give it to me and c) feel is a waste of paper and just causes more mess on our Skytrains/streets. It's not that I don't want to be informed (for free) about our city's happenings, it's that I don't want to be attacked in the morning on my way to work with a fucking newspaper! Seriously guys? Every morning? Come on now. It's at the point where I feel anxiety when I get to the train in the morning because I know you will both be there to corner me like you always do. Maybe if I yell and swear at you the next time you will finally get the point, but probably not.

I agree. It's fucking irritating. I hate having my path blocked by people handing out things. And must they stand right at the crowded entrance of the stations?! Argh!

Or if you're already holding a copy of the paper!

AMEN. As much as I value being informed, I just CAN'T. DEAL. with how sloppy they are and the trivial crap they choose to write about!

Not that the non-free (formerly?-)CanWest-owned papers are much better in either respect...

No kidding. Some of the mistakes give me a huge case of secondhand embarassment :\

It's not just in the morning... trust me.

Oh I know. I don't have to go to that side of Joyce at any other time in the day though so that's why I mentioned the morning only :)

This happens in Richmond after noon at Brighouse Station, too. If I wanted a copy of the paper as reading material, I'd get one from the newspaper boxes or piles ON said boxes, y'know?

Right! It's not like they're in short supply! (and the workers tried handing me a paper when it was 3 in the afternoon, AND already had one in my hands! What the?)

They are oblivious. They did the same thing to me when I had an umbrella in one hand and a coffee in the other. Apparently I have three arms now.

Maybe they want you to put down one of those items in order to grab the paper, but that isn't possible! Seriously!

The two train stations I use every morning - Joyce and Edmonds - have the same two tiny asian ladies handing these things out every morning. At first, they were reasonably assertive, but after a couple of weeks of consistently and politely waving them off, they got the clue.

The problem is, they apparently have incognito supervisors who will occasionally show up and watch to see if these people are making the effort to hand these things out to everybody, and if they are seen not being sufficiently assertive, they risk being fired.

It's a crap job, and it's crap that they have to annoy you, but I don't think they can take the chance of not being jerks in this respect if they want to be able to pay their rent, you know?

I totally understand the point you're making. I go to the other side of Joyce in the morning (the side with the parking lot) and the two guys there will literally race to get to me first. This has been going on for almost 3 months now. I have never taken a newspaper from them, not even once. It's nice that the women you see get the point, but these guys obviously don't, and it's beginning to get on my nerves big time.
